Monkey Business
Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle
Monkey Business: Swinging Through the Wall Street Jungle
John Rolfe, Peter Troob

Haven't read a book in a long while,,, but I am finally having enough free time on my own to read books these days.

In this book, two guys who worked for a few years in the world of investment banking in Wall Street describes in great detail what it is like to be an investment banker. The very basic stance of both the authors is that "Investment Banking sucks and you should not dip your head into that kind of work". The writing style is very ironic and humorous.

To make it very simple, it was a hilarious book! Not just that, it also describes in detail the everyday work of an investment banker. After reading the book, you can really image what it would be like to work in an IB.

Some of the parts I liked:

Depiction of an analyst: "Monkeys", "Not humans, just monkeys crawling all over each other and pulling lice out of each other's fur", "Analysts are at the bottom of the sh*t heap", "They are... the scum below the scum at the bottom of a beer keg", etc

Depiction of how a pitch book gets shuffled among junior bankers, the word processing department, and senior bankers. It seems that the initial document that a junior banker submits gets modified and modified all over again, but the final document mostly ends up in the same exact form as it was in the beginning... This part is soooo funny. I was laughing out loud in Starbucks with a lot of ppl around me when I read this part...I think everyone who is looking for a job in IB should read this part at least once!

Depiction of the political interactions between a junior banker and ppl at the copy center... Wow, what a stupid, time wasting work...

Having read all this, I ask myself: Do you really want to go into investment banking?

It's a question I must keep in mind from now on.

Today, I went out alone for a walk, just wandering around some areas in Tokyo. It's become somewhat of a hobby for me to take these random walks. There are new findings everytime, and today, I was shooting pictures with my cell phone as I went along. I felt like I was a tourist...

Here are some of the scenes from my walk:

In Ebisu:

Ramen! I think Ramen is the best dish to eat in Japan. The more and more I spend time abroad, the more I miss Ramen at home. There are so many shops to choose from, but this one is considered to be one of the most famous in Japan!

In Daikanyama:

I love shopping for clothes around this area, a really fashionable spot for young ppl.

"Alcohol Baton"
Wassup yo? Today, I want to introduce to you guys the "Alcohol Baton". I'm guessing that this "Baton" is only spread among ppl in Japan, but I want to expand this globally (cool!), so I'm gonna do it in English.

So what the heck is the "Alcohol Baton"?

"Alcohol Baton": I think everybody knows what a baton is. It's a kind of stick that is used by relay runners. The person with the baton is the one who runs and is passed on to the next runner.

So this "Alcohol Baton" is passed on from one person to the next as well. It has a series of questions (kind of like a survey) that you have to answer on your blog, and after you finish answering, you have to pass the same series of questions on to other ppl that you know. Those ppl answer the questions just like you did and they also pass it on to other ppl, and the same process is continued. It's kind of like a chain mail.

The "Alcohol Baton" was passed on to me by a great senior of mine who loves to drink. So here I go with the Q&A.

Q1. What usually happens to you when you get drunk?
I get a bit high and talk to ppl more. If I get REALLY drunk, I start talking about things without knowing what I am talking about. In those instances, you might as well think that I have lost my memory...

Q2. What is the worst or most embarrassing experience you had when you got drunk?
I generally keep within my limits, so I don't remember doing anything miserable, but I have two bad episodes when I lost my memory from drinking.

1. This was the first time I lost my memory after entering University. There was an international conference in Narita, and I was there for a cultural event. At that event, there was unlimited Japanese sake, and all I remember is drinking sake like crazy with my friend and a bunch of foreigners. By the time I recovered my conscience, I was in the hotel restroom, laying down right beside the toilet (thank god I was in the men's room!)...

2. Another was when I went to a drinking party held in my university campus. It seems that my senior (the very person who passed me this "alcohol baton"...) made me chug a lot of beer (in Japan, we have a lot of drinking songs that force university students to drink like shit...). I said "It seems" because I don't even remember drinking anything in the first place!!! I didn't even remember the scene when we said "kanpai(cheers)" together...

Fortunately, I don't have any episodes that has to do with "women", hahaha.

Q3. How much did you drink when you had that experience?
I have no idea... Usually, my limit depends on my condition, but it's maybe about 6 bottles, which is probably around 3-4 liters? (Indian Kingfisher is what I assume as 1 bottle, haha. Maybe ppl in Japan or US won't understand, sorry.)

Q4. What was it like on the day you had the worst hangover?
When I found myself next to a girl when I woke up the next morning....
No, just kidding. The worst case was when I woke up in the bathroom when I had the episode I introduced in Q2. I felt like puking for the whole day and had a hard time going home...

Q5. Please take this chance to apologize to the people who you caused trouble for when you got drunk.
I don't remember causing anybody trouble cuz I have no memory... If I did, I'm terribly sorry!!!

Q6. How much alcohol do you have in your refrigerator now?
I stay with my parents and occasionally drink at home, but I think there is only one can of beer in the frige now.

Q7. What is your favorite brand of alcohol?
I'm definitely a beer guy, but I haven't enjoyed that much "high-end" beer before... My favorite is Guiness (Irish).
Following that are Corona (Mexican) and Yebisu (Japan)

Q8. Where was the last place you drank recently?
I drank a can of beer at home last Sunday...

Q9. Is there any kind of alcohol you drink often or have special fondness for?
I like drinking beer on the plane when I am travelling alone. Sounds like an alcoholic... but it's a good way to fall asleep on the plane.

Q10. List five people you want to pass the "Alcohol Baton" to.
Since my strategy is international expansion of "Alcohol Baton", I will give it to people who are not in Japan:
-Rambo
-Hermosa
-Stacy
-Yujiro
-Miyako
